Character
All too often in our world today the emphasis is on sports, grades, popularity, physical appearance and ability. Everyone encourages, praises and supports the best 3 point shooter on the basketball team. A star quarterback is treated like a king. Television commercials convince our young daughters that in order to be successful you have to look like a tall and thin model. An “A” honor student is often panted on the back over and over.
On the other hand, don’t forget to give high fives to the basketball star who exhibits good sportsmanship even when he doesn’t score. Don’t forget to give credit to the football star who respects the coach’s decision to allow others to play. Praise the young lady who befriends an over weight classmate. Honor the A student who is willing to help a C student do better.
As parents we must learn to compliment CHARACTER more than talent. Over time, talent may fade or be lost, but the principles of honesty, caring, sharing, respect, responsibility, and love—character, will last a life time. Invest in teaching your children good character. Their future is at stake and IT ALL STARTS AT HOME!!
